VIDEO: Jessica Chastain Plays a Frontier Painter Who Befriends Sitting Bull in ‘Woman Walks Ahead’ Trailer

Jessica Chastain plays a 19th century artist who heads west in the hopes of painting a portrait of Sitting Bull in “Woman Walks Ahead,” an upcoming historical drama about real-life artist and eventual Native American activist Catherine Weldon.
On Tuesday, A24 dropped the film’s official trailer (above) which begins with Jessica’s character staring out the window of a train, basking in the beauty of the Great Plains. She has just left Brooklyn for the Dakotas so that she can paint landscapes, horses, and Native Americans.
“I’m going to paint the great Sioux chief Sitting Bull,” she declares (above).
Traveling west might prove to be more perilous than she imagined, however, and soon enough she’s getting spit on and robbed. “Western Missouri can be lethal,” explains Colonel Silas Groves, played by recent Oscar winner Sam Rockwell.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, Jessica’s character also finds herself smack dab in the middle of a war between Native American tribes and the U.S. forces trying to seize their land.
Directed by Susanna White and written by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, the film also co-stars Ciarán Hinds (“Justice League”), Bill Camp (“Red Sparrow”), and Michael Greyeyes (“Fear the Walking Dead”) as Sitting Bull.
“Woman Walks Ahead” premieres May 31 on DirecTV and opens June 29 in theaters. Check out the official trailer (above).
