VIDEO: A Quadriplegic, Alcoholic Joaquin Phoenix Pals Around With Jonah Hill in Official ‘Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot’ Trailer

Joaquin Phoenix portrays the late cartoonist John Callahan in Amazon Studios’ “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot,” an upcoming biopic about an alcoholic Portland slacker who discovers the healing power of art after a near-fatal accident leaves him wheelchair-bound.

Released Thursday at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the film’s official trailer (above) begins with Joaquin’s character at a 12-step meeting, recounting his tale of woe. John initially has no intention of remaining sober, but at the meeting he reconnects with and falls for a therapist he met at the hospital (Rooney Mara). It’s there he’s also introduced to his charismatic sponsor Donnie, played by Stern Show celebrity superfan Jonah Hill.

“I was having a great day until I had to stand here in front of all of you!” Donnie jokingly tells the group in the trailer (above).

John’s penchant for partying isn’t the only thing that changes after his accident, either. He soon realizes he has a unique talent for creating macabre cartoons and before long he’s rolling around town in a motorized wheelchair and showing off his art.

Gus Van Sant wrote and directed the film, adapting it from Callahan’s autobiography of the same name. Other co-stars include past Stern Show guest Jack Black, “Portlandia’s” Carrie Brownstein, and Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon.

“Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot” opens July 13 in select theaters. Watch the official trailer (above).
