A trailblazing African-American police detective teams up with a Jewish partner to take down a Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard in the debut trailer for “BlacKkKlansman,” a ‘70s-set Spike Lee film produced by Jordan Peele and the team behind “Get Out.”

Released Monday, the film’s official trailer (above) teases the true story of Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), the first black police detective in Colorado Springs, Colo., history. Hoping to infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan and its leader David Duke (Topher Grace), Ron sends his colleague Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) undercover.

Written and directed by Lee—the celebrated filmmaker behind “Do the Right Thing,” “Malcolm X,” and, more recently, Nick Cannon’s “Chi-Raq”—“BlacKkKlansman” also stars Laura Harrier, Corey Hawkins, and Harry Belafonte. Son of Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington, John David is best known for starring opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Rob Corddry on HBO’s “Ballers.” Adam, meanwhile, has starred in a string of features since his 2015 Stern Show debut, including opposite Channing Tatum in “Logan Lucky,” alongside Ben Stiller in “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected),” and as the lightsaber-wielding villain Kylo Ren in last year’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

“BlacKkKlansman” premiered Monday night at the Cannes Film Festival to a reported six-minute standing ovation and opens Aug. 10 in theaters across the country. Watch the official trailer (above).
