VIDEO: Bill Hader, Amy Poehler, and Melissa McCarthy Among Stars of New Doc on ‘Saturday Night Live’ Trailblazer Gilda Radner

“Love, Gilda” focuses on the late comedian's own words, as read by her celebrity colleagues and those she inspired

A handful of Hollywood heavyweights pay tribute to trailblazing comedian and original “Saturday Night Live” cast member Gilda Radner in the newly released trailer for “Love, Gilda,” an upcoming documentary from Magnolia Pictures.

The trailer (above) begins with Stern Show regulars Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, and Melissa McCarthy sitting down to read letters penned by the late comedian, who they say is one of their big inspirations. “I can’t believe this is her handwriting,” Amy says as she sifts through Gilda’s letters.

“This is a real honor. Like, seriously, this is huge,” Bill adds.

In addition to letters and diaries from Gilda, home movies, and recently discovered audiotapes, the doc utilizes interviews with a cavalcade of her contemporaries, including Lorne Michaels, Chevy Chase, Paul Shaffer, Laraine Newman, and Martin Short, who spoke to Howard about his on and off-screen relationship with Gilda during his 2014 Stern Show debut. It also has sit-downs with quite a few “SNL” stars who followed in her footsteps, like Maya Rudolph and Cecily Strong.

“Love, Gilda” tracks not only Gilda’s meteoric rise to fame and all the barriers she needed to break down for female comedians along the way, but also her off-camera battles, including the struggle with cancer which tragically claimed her life in 1989.

Directed by Lisa D’Apolito, “Love, Gilda” hits theaters Sept. 21. Watch the official trailer (above).
