Stern Show guest’s new Netflix drama debuts in October

Maggie Gyllenhaal stars as a Staten Island educator determined to nurture one of her seemingly gifted five-year-old students in “The Kindergarten Teacher,” debuting on Netflix in October.

The film’s newly released official trailer (above) begins with the Oscar-nominated actress, 2014 Stern Show guest, and current star of “The Deuce” discovering one of her young students, Jimmy (Parker Sevak), might have an incredible aptitude for poetry.

“I think we have a young Mozart,” Maggie’s character Lisa explains over a montage of her trying to bond with the boy, including one scene where she drops to her knees and meows like a cat.

The promo teases a darker turn, however, after Lisa gets pushback from Jimmy’s father who is decidedly less interested in encouraging his son to be a poet. Soon, Maggie’s titular teacher is calling her student when she shouldn’t be and whisking him away for a potentially ill-advised cross-country adventure filled with art, swimming, and poetry aplenty.

“The Kindergarten Teacher” is written and directed by Sara Colangelo (“Little Accidents”). A remake of a critically acclaimed Israeli movie of the same name, the film debuted at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and co-stars Gael García Bernal, Michael Chernus (“The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)”), Anna Baryshnikov (“Manchester by the Sea”), Rosa Salazar (“Alita: Battle Angel”).

“The Kindergarten Teacher” hits Netflix on Oct. 12. Watch the official trailer (above).
