It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s … Dreamer.

The CW has released a fresh “Supergirl” Season 4 trailer, giving fans a first glimpse of one of the comic book-inspired drama’s most anticipated new characters: Nia Nal, a.k.a. Dreamer, a transgender superhero portrayed by transgender actress Nicole Maines.

Maines’ debut is significant beyond her character’s effect on “Supergirl’s” upcoming story lines. Dreamer will reportedly be the first transgender superhero to appear on television. Announced earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con, the character is described as “a soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others.”

Though the teaser does offer a look at Maines as Nia, the promo predominantly revolves around the further adventures of Nia’s co-worker Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist), a.k.a. Supergirl, and the challenges she’ll face when the show picks back up.

“Fear. No matter how much we believe in ourselves, that never really goes away,” Melissa’s character explains (above) over a montage of her kicking ass and not taking names. “I think, ‘I’m not afraid of anything,’ and then something chases me back down the rabbit hole. But once we catch ourselves, we have to jump right back out there.”

“Supergirl” Season 4 premieres Sunday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. on the CW. Watch the latest teaser (above) and check out more of what’s coming to TV this fall here.
