Hailee Steinfeld and Her Transformer Are on the Run From John Cena in New ‘Bumblebee’ Trailer

Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay-produced prequel hits theaters in December

September 24, 2018

Hailee Steinfeld’s 18th birthday present is more than meets the eye in the official trailer for “Bumblebee,” the Steven Spielberg-produced “Transformers” prequel rolling into theaters in December.

Hailee (“Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse”) and Stern Show veteran John Cena star opposite a yellow Volkswagen Beetle in the film, set a few decades before the events of Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf’s franchise-spawning blockbuster “Transformers.”

Released Monday, the official trailer (above) begins with Hailee’s character Charlie riding her bike through a quiet California beach town. She winds up in a junkyard, where the proprietor gives her a most unusual birthday present: a dusty, broken-down, yellow VW bug.

After reviving the car and driving it home, however, Charlie realizes her newly acquired ride is actually a sentient, transforming, extraterrestrial Autobot named Bumblebee. She welcomes Bumbebee into her home, but the situation gets complicated after they learn Cena and his shadowy government agency Sector 7 is coming for them. Soon, Charlie and Bumblebee are on the run from the government and a few robot villains called Decepticons.

Directed by Travis Knight (“Kubo and the Two Strings”), the action-heavy coming-of-age film co-stars Jorge Lendeborg Jr., John Ortiz, Jason Drucker, and Wrap Up Show veteran Pamela Adlon a and features the voices of Justin Theroux and Angela Bassett as Decepticons.

“Bumblebee” rides into theaters on Dec. 21. Watch the official trailer (above).
