VIDEO: Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax Star in Thrash Metal Documentary ‘Murder in the Front Row’

Upcoming film explores the heavy metal scene’s San Francisco Bay Area origins

March 21, 2019

Metallica legends and Stern Show veterans Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Rob Trujillo, and Kirk Hammett are among the many heavy metal icons starring in the new trailer for “Murder in the Front Row,” a documentary about the rise of thrash metal in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1980s.

Directed by Adam Dubin, the filmmaker behind “A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica,” “Jim Breuer: Comic Frenzy,” and the Beastie Boys’ infamous “Fight for Your Right to Party” music video, the upcoming doc tells the story of a small group of headbangers who eschewed the more polished ‘80s rock found on MTV in favor of “a more dangerous brand of metal” that would later become known as thrash.

In addition to chronicling the rise of the thrash movement through animation, photography, and fan testimony, “Murder in the Front Row” features interviews with some of the scene’s most revolutionary bands, including Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, Exodus, Testament, and of course Metallica, among others.

Narrated by actor, writer, comedian, and Bay Area-native Brian Posehn (“The Sarah Silverman Program”), the film opens next month in San Francisco. According to Rolling Stone, the doc premiere will be followed by a nearby performance from Metal Allegiance, a heavy metal supergroup featuring members of Megadeth and Testament.

As Stern Show fans will remember, Metallica spoke to Howard all about their early days as a band during their 2016 visit to the Stern Show. They also delivered epic live performances of several of their biggest hits, including “Sad but True” and “Master of Puppets.” Watch them perform “Master of Puppets” (below) and check out Metallica’s full sit-down with Howard here.

“Murder in the Front Row: The San Francisco Bay Area Thrash Metal Story” opens April 20 in San Francisco.
