A group of teens unwittingly sets loose a gruesome array of horrors in “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” Guillermo Del Toro and André Øvredal’s long-awaited cinematic adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s identically titled children’s book series from the 1980s.
Set in the small town of Mill Valley in 1968, the film’s trailer begins with the children wandering into a creepy mansion and stumbling across a troubled girl’s collection of short, scary stories. Things take a turn for the creepy after Stella (Zoe Margaret Colletti) opens the book and sneaks a peek at the nightmares contained within. Soon, her otherwise quiet town is tormented by unspeakable creatures, including ghosts, ghouls, evil scarecrows, and perhaps even a possessed pimple.
“You don’t read the book. The book reads you,” the terrified teenager explains as all hell breaks loose around her.
Oscar-winning director Guillermo Del Toro (“The Shape of Water”) produced and co-wrote the script for “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” which Øvredal (“Trollhunter”) directed. The film co-stars Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, and Gil Bellows, among others.
“Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” haunts theaters this summer.
