VIDEO: Batman’s Butler Cleans Up London in New Crime Drama ‘Pennyworth’

1960s-set origin story debuts this summer on Epix

There’s more to Batman’s beloved butler than bowties, tailcoats, and a British accent—he’s apparently also a special forces-trained hero in his own right.

Epix unleashed the first trailer for “Pennyworth,” its DC Comics-inspired drama chronicling the young adventures of Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon)—an army veteran who will one day grow up to dust, tidy, and mop the Batcave. Set in 1960s London, after Alfred has left the British SAS to form his own security company, the trailer shows him befriending a young billionaire by the name of Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge).

After Thomas’s girlfriend (and the Dark Knight’s eventual mother) Martha (Emma Paetz) gets kidnapped, it seems only Alfred has the quick wits and sharp skills to get her back. “If things go pear shaped,” he tells Thomas amid a montage of showgirls, assassination attempts, and ubiquitously British humor. “I’ll do my best to keep you alive.”

Executive produced by Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, the origin story also stars Hainsley Lloyd, Jason Flemyng, Ryan Fletcher, and singer-songwriter Paloma Faith.
