AUDIO: Sheryl Crow Covers Bob Dylan’s ‘Everything Is Broken’ With Help From Jason Isbell

Song hails from the 2017 Stern Show guest’s upcoming album “Threads”

July 12, 2019

Sheryl Crow turned back the clock on Friday with the release of her and Jason Isbell’s cover of “Everything Is Broken,” a classic Bob Dylan tune from 1989. The duet appears on Crow’s collaboration-heavy LP “Threads,” available late next month.

The 2017 Stern Show guest has covered Dylan before, with her renditions of “Tombstone Blues” and “Mississippi” appearing on two of her past albums. With “Everything Is Broken” she and Isbell—a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and former member of Drive-By Truckers—take turns singing verses amid a sea of up-tempo guitar and harmonica riffs.

The song is one of several team-ups on “Threads,” Crow’s 11th album. It follows previously released tunes like “Redemption Day” (with Johnny Cash) and “Still the Good Old Days” (with fellow Stern Show veteran Joe Walsh). Other names lending their talents to the album include past Stern Show guests Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Gary Clark Jr., James Taylor, Sting, and Willie Nelson as well as Stevie Nicks, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, and St. Vincent.

“I became inspired to record an album of musical experiences with the legacy artists who inspired me to want to be a great songwriter, musician, and producer,” Crow said in a statement about her new album. “It is a celebration with them, and a tribute to them. Just as importantly, I wanted to work with younger artists on this record, who I believe will pick up the torch and continue to light the way for humanity with their stories and their songs for many years to come. Their music inspires me every day.”

As Stern Show fans will remember, Sheryl stopped by the Stern Show in 2017 and opened up to Howard about her past interactions with a variety of other A-list artists, including the likes of Prince, Michael Jackson, and Fleetwood Mac.
