World War II-era satire opens Oct. 18

A lonely German boy endures the tribulations of youth with a little help from a cheery imaginary Adolph Hitler in “Jojo Rabbit,” a genre-bending World War II-era satire from Taika Waititi.

The film follows Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis), a young boy mocked by his peers, whose world gets turned upside down after he learns his mother—played by past Stern Show guest Scarlett Johansson—has been hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie ) from the Nazis. Thankfully for Jojo, his imaginary pal Hitler (Waititi) always has his back in times of duress.

“What’s wrong little man?” Taika’s version of the genocidal dictator asks Jojo at one point in the teaser while he’s being picked on.

“They call me a scared rabbit,” Jojo responds.

“Let them say whatever they want,” Hitler tells him. “People used to say a lot of nasty things about me. Oh, this guy’s a lunatic. Oh, look at that psycho, he’s going to get us all killed.”

“Jojo Rabbit” co-stars Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, and Sam Rockwell. Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”) wrote and directed the feature, adapting it from the book “Caging Skies” by Christine Leunens. The New Zealand filmmaker was also recently announced as the director of Marvel’s “Thor: Love and Thunder,” due out in 2021.

“Jojo Rabbit” premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September before arriving in theaters on Oct. 18.
