John Goodman has an atypical relationship with the Man Upstairs in the official trailer for “The Righteous Gemstones,” Danny McBride’s upcoming HBO comedy about a family of successful but corrupt televangelists.

The new clip begins with Eli Gemstone (Goodman) praying for a successful service. “Dear God, today is going to be big. The most watched daytime service of the year, over 6 million worldwide,” the repeat Stern Show guest’s character says. But it soon becomes apparent the Gemstones are anything but humble servants of the Lord—Eli and his children sin like it’s going out of style and enjoy a luxurious lifestyle at the expense of their congregation.

Their empire may be on the brink of crumbling, however, thanks to Eli’s bumbling sons Jesse (McBride) and Kelvin (Wrap Up Show guest Adam DeVine). Goodman’s character at one point grows so frustrated by his children’s incompetence, he snaps and throws a Jesus Christ action figure across the room.

“The Righteous Gemstones” is produced, created, written, and directed by McBride, who also masterminded the HBO comedies “Eastbound & Down” and “Vice Principals.” The new series co-stars Edi Patterson, Cassidy Freeman, Tony Calvero, Tim Baltz, Walton Goggins, and Greg Alan Williams.

“The Righteous Gemstones” premieres Aug. 18 at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
