VIDEO: Adam Sandler Plays a Diamond Peddler Who Loves to Gamble in ‘Uncut Gems’ Trailer

Idina Menzel, Lakeith Stanfield, and retired NBA star Kevin Garnett co-star in the December film

Adam Sandler in character as a diamond seller with a penchant for outrageous sports bets might sound like the backbone of a hilarious “Saturday Night Live” sketch, but it’s actually the premise for the upcoming thriller “Uncut Gems.”

Released Tuesday, the trailer shows the actor and comedian getting serious as a jewelry store owner whose business is threatened by his increasingly outrageous gambling habits. “I made a crazy risk. A gamble. And it’s about to pay off,” he says as the clip begins (above).

The Stern Show guest’s fortune seemingly rides on the talents of retired NBA legend Kevin Garnett, who co-stars in the film as himself. “I want the Celtics to cover. I want the Celtics at halftime. I want Garnett points and rebounds,” Sandler tells his bookie, played by sports radio host Mike Francesa.

“That’s the dumbest fucking bet I ever heard of,” Francesa responds.

Directed by Benny and Josh Safdie, the brothers behind the Robert Pattinson film “Good Time,” Adam’s new movie also features Lakeith Stanfield, Idina Menzel, Julia Fox, and Eric Bogosian. While “Uncut Gems” isn’t Sandler’s first dramatic performance, rumors are already circulating this could be the one to score him an Oscar nomination. 2019 has been a big year for the actor already—just this past Sunday he was up for an Emmy after his long-awaited return to “Saturday Night Live.”

Adam has memorably joined the Stern Show multiple times over the years. In 2018, he spoke to Howard about everything from how the public has reacted to his material to the time he met Bruce Springsteen at the gym. See a clip from Adam’s sit down with Howard (below).

“Uncut Gems” opens in theaters this December.
