VIDEO: Ryan Reynolds’ NPC Becomes the Main Character in First ‘Free Guy’ Trailer

The action-comedy set in an open-world video game will release July 2020

December 9, 2019

In the first trailer for “Free Guy,” the action-comedy due out next July, Ryan Reynolds plays Guy, a non-player character and bank teller who usually accepts the monotony that comes with such an existence. “Mondays, am I right, Joe?” Guy remarks to a fellow NPC who has just been thrown out a plate-glass window.

During one of the countless bank heists he has been victim to, however, Guy has a change of tune. “Hey Bud, you ever think that there’s gotta be more?” he asks security guard Buddy (Lil Rel Howery). “The stuff we do day after day … being shot at, run over, taken hostage.”

After putting on the eyewear of a player character he has taken down, Guy experiences a whole new world in which he fights off bad guys and gets to be the hero.

“Is this what recreational drugs feels like?” he asks a random driver.

“Guy, this world, it’s a video game and it’s full of bad guys,” a fellow NPC (Jodie Comer) tells him. “We need you to be the good guy,”

Directed by Shawn Levy (“Stranger Things”) and written by Matt Lieberman (“The Addams Family”) and Zak Penn (“Ready Player One”), the film also stars Joe Keery (“Stranger Things”), and Taika Waititi (“The Mandalorian”).

“Free Guy” opens July 3.
