Phylicia Rashad & Angela Bassett co-star in the upcoming Pixar film

Jamie Foxx plays a musician and middle-school band teacher who falls down a manhole and sends his spirit shuffling off the mortal coil in the upcoming Pixar comedy “Soul.”

As the clip begins, Joe Gardner (Foxx) is headed to a jazz club for a once-in-a-lifetime performance, but as fate would have it an accident puts his body in a coma and his soul in the Great Before, a place where new souls prepare to make the long trek to the world of the living. It’s also a place where he can no longer smell nor taste Earthly pleasures like pizza. Foxx’s character eventually enlists the help of one particularly feisty young soul (voiced by fellow Stern Show veteran Tina Fey) to try and escape the afterlife and rejoin his body.

But their journey back to Earth will not be easy. “Is all this living really worth dying for?” Fey’s character asks him at one point (above).

As it turns out, Fey’s character isn’t the only young soul Jamie has mentored in recent years. During his 2017 visit to the Stern Show, the award-winning actor and musician revealed he’d once mentored singer, songwriter, and eventual pop superstar Ed Sheeran, among others. “My house is open because I feel it … all the young cats come to my house,” Jamie told Howard. Listen to a clip from their conversation (below).

“Soul” is directed by Pete Docter (“Inside Out”) and Kemp Powers (“One Night in Miami”). The animated film co-stars Angela Bassett, Ahmir Questlove Thompson, and Daveed Diggs and features a score composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails fame.

“Soul” opens June 19.
