Billie Eilish, Ice Cube, and Perry Farrell sing Coachella’s praises in a sneak peek for “20 Years in the Desert,” an upcoming documentary about the origins and cultural impact of the massively popular California music festival.

“Everybody knows what Coachella is,” Eilish explains at the top of the clip (above). “Even if you don’t care about music, you know.” The Grammy-winning teenager speaks from experience, of course—she headlined there in 2019.

“The biggest artists in the world do Coachella. So, you know, the pressure’s there to bring it,” fellow Stern Show veteran Ice Cube adds a bit later. “You want people talking about your performance. You want to open up the paper the next day, see them talking about what you did.”

According to Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros frontman Perry Farrell, there’s intense pressure for performers to be on their A-game at the festival. “You’re gonna be judged, man, when you hit Coachella’s stage and it’s gonna be talked about for the rest of the year, so you better get your shit right,” the rock star says.

Available for streaming in April, the YouTube Original documentary blends interviews, news footage, and plenty of concert footage straight from Coachella Valley itself to explain not just the history of the festival but also how, in just two decades, it’s managed to permeate nearly every aspect of American culture. Dozens of celebrities appear in the three-and-a-half minute clip, including Barack Obama, Beyoncé, Radiohead, and even a Tupac hologram as well as Stern Show veterans Sir Paul McCartney, Madonna, Guns N’ Roses, Snoop Dogg, Pharrell, AC/DC, Jimmy Kimmel, and more.

Coachella has been a topic of conversation on the Stern Show numerous times since its inception in 1999. In 2019, rocker Gary Clark Jr. told Howard he actually wooed his eventual wife by taking her on a trip to Coachella. When comedian David Spade sat down with Howard in 2016 he had some fun skewering Coachella’s stereotypical attendees. “That’s where girls go to try on clothes and take photos,” Spade joked. “Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert” debuts April 10 on YouTube.
