Katy Perry Gets Shot Out of a Cannon in Her New Music Video for ‘Smile’

Pop superstar's sixth studio album arrives Aug. 28

Katy Perry can’t stop clowning around in the new music video for “Smile,” the title track off her Aug. 28 album.

The pregnant pop superstar and recent Stern Show guest kicks off the Mathew Miguel Cullen-directed video by putting the finishing touches on a cream pie. She gets sidetracked while delivering it, however, by a circus-themed video game featuring clown cars, trapeze artists, and the music icon’s video game avatar getting shot out of a cannon. Katy ultimately learns a few life lessons from the video game adventure and the clip ends with her dressing up like a clown in real life and smashing the cream pie in her own face.

The new music video is the pop icon’s second for “Smile,” her sixth studio album. The tune is certainly a cheerful sounding one, but during her Stern Show return last month Katy told Howard the road to creating “Smile” was actually paved with its fair share of frowns. “This record is full of hopefulness and resilience and joy because it was made during a dark time when I was clinically depressed because I had a change in my career,” Katy said. “The last record didn’t necessarily meet my expectations, but … now I feel like I can create and be more dimensional as an artist and also as a human being.”
