Timothée Chalamet experiences pain, passion, and a severe case of sandworms in the official trailer for the star-studded sci-fi epic “Dune,” arriving in December.

The “Call Me by Your Name” Oscar nominee plays Paul Atreides, a gifted young aristocrat who ventures to a dangerous planet on his family’s behalf to protect his people and secure the universe’s most precious commodity: a mind-altering drug known as “the spice.” Though Paul’s adventure through the desert wasteland results in some sand-covered smooches with a mysterious blue-eyed woman played by “Spider-Man: Far From Home” star Zendaya, it also pits him and his family against an assortment of deadly rivals, including a giant spaceworm.

“This is an extermination,” Chalamet declares at one point (above) over images of scheming enemies, marching armies, and low-gravity sword fights. “They’re picking my family off, one by one.”

Directed by Denis Villeneuve (“Sicario”) and adapted from Frank Herbert’s classic science-fiction novel of the same name, “Dune” co-stars Rebecca Ferguson (“Mission: Impossible – Fallout”), Oscar Isaac (“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”), Jason Momoa (“Aquaman”), Dave Bautista (“Avengers: End Game”), Javier Bardem (“Skyfall”), Stellan Skarsgård (“Chernobyl”), and Josh Brolin (“No Country for Old Men”).

“Dune” is slated to hit theaters on Dec. 18.
