Anthony Mackie may be best known for kicking ass as one of Captain America’s sidekicks in Marvel’s “Avengers” movies, but in the trailer for Netflix’s sci-fi war film “Outside the Wire” the actor finally gets the chance to play a super soldier of his own.

Set in a future where battlefields are populated by human soldiers and robot grunts alike, the film follows Harp (Damson Idris), a disgraced drone pilot who gets sent into a deadly militarized zone after disobeying orders. There he finds himself under the command of Captain Leo (Mackie), an officer who also happens to be an android, as the duo sets off to locate a doomsday device before it lands in the hands of dangerous insurgents.

“I’m a prototype and my existence is classified, but I can’t do this alone. I need someone who thinks outside the box,” Mackie’s character tells Harp (above). “Welcome to the war, kid.”

“Outside the Wire” is produced by the studio behind Chris Hemsworth’s “Extraction” and Charlize Theron’s “Old Guard,” which the actress joined the Stern Show to discuss in June. Directed by Mikael Håfström (“Escape Plan”) and written by Rob Yescombe and Rowan Athale, the upcoming film also features Emily Beecham (“Hail, Caesar!”), Michael Kelly (“House of Cards”), and Pilou Asbæk, who played Euron Greyjoy in “Game of Thrones.”

“Outside the Wire” premieres Jan. 15 on Netflix.
