Between 20 years with his brother Toby in the hardcore band H20, and currently with the Offspring and Juliette Lewis’ band the Licks, musician Todd Morse knows a thing or two about punk rock. But on Wednesday he showed a softer side — specifically Howard’s.

“I had a feeling that my whole life I was sort of raised to not want too much emotionally and I wore this like suit of armor in my life so I said, ‘This might be a song,” Howard recalled recently. “Then I sat and thought about this, and nothing happened.”

Fortunately, something did happen for Morse, who told executive producer Gary Dell’Abate in an email that the idea gave him inspiration. “Howard mentioned wishing he could write a song called ‘Suit of Armor’ about his journey from childhood to now — I feel his pain, so I wrote this song for him,” he wrote.

The track, which also features Jonah Nimoy, a touring member of Offspring and the grandson of late “Star Trek” star Leonard Nimoy, drew praise from Howard. “I should have written this … he’s going to have a hit song with my thought,” he said before adding, “Talented guy … he touched me.”
