Willem Dafoe brings Emma Stone back to life in the surrealist sci-fi comedy “Poor Things,” arriving in September.

Dafoe stars as Dr. Godwin Baxter, an unorthodox scientist who reanimates his companion Bella Baxter (Stone). What he doesn’t account for is that Bella will become a symbol of equality and justice for those around her, including characters played by Mark Ruffalo and recent Stern Show veteran Jerrod Carmichael.

“She’s an experiment. Her brain and her body are not quite synchronized. But she’s progressing at an accelerated pace,” Dafoe says in the trailer (above).

“It is the goal of all to progress, grow,” Stone’s character adds over images of her kicking, slapping, punching, and having sex.

“Poor Things” is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (“The Favourite”) and written by Tony McNamara, who adapted it from Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel of the same name. The film also stars Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Margaret Qualley.

“Poor Things” hits theaters Sept. 8.
