JD Harmeyer Tried Having a Normal Conversation With Samantha Bee … By Talking About the Time He Saw a Dead Body

“What? Oh my God. What?!” the comedian and “Full Frontal” host responds

JD Harmeyer has been enjoying digital conversations with comedian and “Full Frontal” host Samantha Bee for years, but on Tuesday Howard revealed the real-life friendship between his staffer and the recent Musical Radio guest seemed strained when they met at SiriusXM.

“She saw JD and they had a conversation and we were lucky enough to tape it,” Howard explained. “And it’s every bit as awkward as you think it would be.”

Their conversation got off to an awkward start when Samantha said it was nice to see JD and the staffer responded with “err, yeah.” Already befuddled by his staffer’s decision making, Howard pressed pause on the clip. “Why wouldn’t you say, ‘Oh, it’s so nice to see you, too, Samantha?’” he wondered.

“For whatever reason my brain locks up or whatever and I can’t actually say stuff—I just don’t know what to say at certain times, or I can’t physically say it,” JD said.

“All you have to do is literally repeat what she said,” Howard pointed out.

“It’s a common thing to return a greeting,” Howard’s co-host Robin Quivers agreed.

“I’m not a common person,” JD said. “I don’t know what to tell you.”

Neither Howard nor Robin argued that point, instead they returned to the clip. Things really started getting weird between JD and Samantha when he brought up a corpse he had recently encountered on his way to one of her shows. “ I ended up seeing like a dead body on the sidewalk,” JD told her, laughing nervously the entire time. “Like, someone had just jumped off a building.”

Bee seemed equal parts horrified and perplexed. “What? Oh my God. What?!” she responded.

Howard stopped the tape again and asked, “JD, what are you laughing about?”

“Because it was just awkward,” JD stammered. “And I didn’t—you know, you laugh when it’s awkward.”

JD only dug himself in deeper with Samantha when he started talking about what the body looked like. Then, he abruptly changed the subject. “So, uh, yeah, how’s your day so far?” he asked her.

“This is 100 percent the highlight,” Samantha laughed.

“What are you doing after this?” JD pressed. “What are you doing later today? What’s on your schedule?”

“I’m gonna go back to my office and then I’m actually gonna go do [‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’] tonight … it’s a real busy day,” she said. “What are you gonna do after this?”

“Today’s laundry day, so I have to do my laundry,” JD said.

Samantha seemed ready to ask JD a follow-up question about his laundry situation, but he cut her off before she could say anything. “Alright, I have to go now,” he said. “That, that, that’s it—thank you very much.”

Howard was mystified JD ended the conversation so suddenly, while Robin still couldn’t understand why he didn’t just return a normal greeting to her at the beginning. “Do you have actual feelings, JD?” Robin asked. “How did you feel seeing Samantha Bee?”

“It was very nice to see her,” JD said.

“That would’ve been a thing to say,” Robin pointed out.

“Okay,” JD stammered. “Monday morning quarterback there.”

Howard, meanwhile, enjoyed having another look into the psyche of one of his more atypical employees. “Well, you know what, thank you for letting us record that,” he concluded. “It was an interesting insight into what goes on around here.
