“Welcome to the family,” Howard tells the legendary drummer
August 8, 2025Give us fuel, give us fire, give us … an all-new, year-round Metallica channel only on SiriusXM?
Legendary heavy metal drummer and longtime Stern Show guest Lars Ulrich joined Howard for a surprise broadcast on Wednesday to make an exciting, exclusive announcement sure to thrill Metallica fans across the globe: “Metallica is getting its own SiriusXM channel,” Ulrich said with a smile. “Channel 42 will be ‘Maximum Metallica.’”
“The channel will feature the most Metallica anywhere,” Howard added. “That means mega hits, deep cuts, live shows, rare recordings, exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes stories, and surprises from the band.”
As Lars explained it, he and his Metallica bandmates were very involved in the making of the channel. “[We said] if we’re gonna do this, it’s gotta be us, it’s gotta be our flavor, it’s gotta be us curating it.”
The “For Whom the Bell Tolls” drummer went on to explain the “Maximum Metallica” bell will be tolling for everyone with a SiriusXM radio in September, as the channel would be free for both subscribers and non-subscribers alike.
To celebrate the new channel, SiriusXM is also hosting a live Metallica performance at the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, N.Y., on Thursday. Aug. 28. “It’s not gonna be acoustic. It’s gonna be full blast, full volume, full throttle. I think [everybody] in Amagansett will be able to hear this,” Lars joked.
“Wow, that’s a hell of an announcement,” Howard concluded. “Welcome to the family. I’m glad you guys are on SiriusXM.”
