VIDEO: Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt Team Up for Soviet-Era Spoof ‘Comrade Detective’

A-list actors lend their American voices to two Romanian cops in new Amazon comedy series

July 28, 2017

Channing Tatum has gotten his hands on a tape of one of the greatest TV shows in Romanian history, but he’ll need a VCR and some vodka in order to play it.

So is the setup of Amazon’s new original comedy series “Comrade Detective.” The first-look trailer for the show (above) offers a straight shot of satire as Channing lends his dubbed-in American voice to anti-American cop Gregor Anghel while he patrols the streets of Bucharest in the Soviet-era 1980s.

“You don’t become a good communist by going to meetings or memorizing the Manifesto. You do it … with your fist,” Tatum explains.

Gregor’s motherland-loving partner, Detective Baciu, has his English dialogue delivered for him by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the two take on everything from a gunman in a Ronald Reagan mask to a femme fatale in a tight pair of Jordache jeans.

Also providing voices to various Cold War characters are Nick Offerman, Fred Armisen, Jenny Slate, Jason Mantzoukas, Jake Johnson, Kim Basinger, Bobby Cannavale, Richard Jenkins, Debra Winger, Mark Duplass, Mahershala Ali, Chloë Sevigny, Jerrod Carmichael, Bo Burnham and John Early. The series comes from screenwriters Brian Gatewood and Alex Tanaka and is directed by Rhys Thomas.

“Comrade Detective” premieres Aug. 4 on Amazon.
