Dave Grohl, elder statesman of rock, current Foo Fighter, and ex-Nirvana drummer, had to start somewhere.

In this outtake from the Foo Fighters’ “Sonic Highways” docuseries, Grohl listens to “Gods Look Down,” his first ever demo recording from 1990. The tune was recorded at Barrett Jones’ Laundry Room Studio and features Grohl playing all the instruments, much like on the Foo Fighters debut album. “Gods Look Down,” which was eventually recorded with Grohl’s pre-Nirvana band Scream, also marked the first time Grohl would perform lead vocals on a track.

Grohl’s reaction as he isolates his vocals may remind viewers of looking at their awkward high school photos. “I don’t think my balls had dropped yet,” Grohl said.
