David Ayer-directed Netflix film co-stars Joel Edgerton and Ike Barinholtz

Unlikely pairings are a staple of the buddy cop genre, which has evolved considerably since Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger teamed up to solve a Mississippi murder in the 1968 Best-Picture winner “In the Heat of the Night.” But perhaps no pairing has ever been more unlikely than the one featured in the latest trailer for Netflix’s “Bright” (above).

Will Smith stars as L.A.P.D. Officer Daryl Ward in the upcoming fantasy-action film, which sees his human character partnered up with an orc cop played by Joel Edgerton. Set in a world where humans, orcs, fairies, and elves have co-existed since the dawn of civilization, the recently released second trailer (above) promises a healthy mix of action, fantasy, social commentary, and witty banter.

“I need you to take your fat, Shrek-looking ass back the fuck home to Fiona,” Smith’s character yells at one point—before promptly getting pummeled by a gang of orcs.

Directed by “Suicide Squad’s” David Ayer and debuting Dec. 22 on Netflix, the film also stars Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Édgar Ramírez, and Stern Show celebrity superfan Ike Barinholtz.

Barinholtz, who along with Smith also starred in Ayer’s blockbuster DC Comics film “Suicide Squad,” spoke about working on the project at length during his most recent Stern Show visit. Hear the anecdote he shared with Howard about making out with the film’s other star—Jared Leto (below).
