VIDEO: Claire Danes and Jim Parsons Struggle to Find a School for Their Gender Nonconforming 4-Year-Old in ‘A Kid Like Jake’
Drama co-stars Priyanka Chopra, Ann Dowd, and recent Oscar-nominee Octavia Spencer
April 13, 2018“Homeland’s” Claire Danes and “The Big Bang Theory’s” Jim Parsons star as a Brooklyn couple struggling to find a good school for their gender nonconforming four-year-old in “A Kid Like Jake.”
IFC Films just dropped the official trailer for the drama (above) which debuted in January at the Sundance Film Festival and opens in theaters in June. The clip begins with Alex (Claire) and Greg (Jim) trying to place their precocious kid Jake (Leo James Davis) in one of New York City’s ultra-competitive private schools, but the search proves difficult.
When a local preschool director (Oscar-nominated “Shape of Water” star Octavia Spencer) takes note of Jake’s preference for Disney princesses over action figures and tells them their child’s “gender expansive” behavior could help Jake get admitted into a top school, they’re suddenly faced with a parenting dilemma they couldn’t have foreseen.
Claire has starred in a number of well received films throughout her storied career, from Baz Luhrmann’s take on “Romeo + Juliet” to the Steve Martin-penned drama “Shopgirl,” but in recent years she has spent more time on the small screen, winning two different Emmy awards for her turn as a bipolar C.I.A. agent on Showtime’s “Homeland.” When the actress made her Stern Show debut in 2015, she discussed both her future on “Homeland” as well as branching out into other film and TV genres.
“A Kid Like Jake” is directed by Silas Howard (“Transparent”) and written by Daniel Pearle, adapted from his 2013 play of the same name. The film, also starring Ann Dowd and Priyanka Chopra, opens June 8.
