Oscar-nominated actor Tom Hardy plays a reporter who stumbles across a mysterious black substance that grants him superpowers with a side of psychosis in “Venom,” Sony’s upcoming spinoff about one of Spider-Man most infamous villains.

The latest trailer for the sci-fi thriller (above) begins with Hardy’s character Eddie Brock going undercover to investigate a shady corporation that might be using a black, gooey alien symbiote to conduct dangerous experiments on humans. While on assignment, however, he comes into contact with the mysterious substance and almost immediately begins to change. Suddenly, Eddie’s dropping the royal “we” in conversation and stretching his arms out across the room to ward off attackers.

For a while, it looks like he may have bitten off more than he can chew, but then Eddie grows super long fangs and a prehensile tongue and it becomes clear he can chew a bit more than he realized.

“What the hell are you?” a man on the precipice of being devoured asks Hardy’s character in the trailer (above).

“We are Venom,” it responds.

“Venom,” directed by Ruben Fleischer and co-starring Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, and Jenny Slate, opens Oct. 5. Watch the official trailer (above).
