VIDEO: Mindy Kaling Helps Save Emma Thompson’s Struggling Talk Show in ‘Late Night’ Trailer
John Lithgow, Reid Scott, and Stern Show celebrity superfan Ike Barinholtz co-star in the upcoming comedy, opening June 7
March 7, 20192014 Stern Show guest Mindy Kaling stars as a fresh-faced writer who helps Emma Thompson revive a flailing talk show in the official trailer for the upcoming comedy “Late Night.”
The clip begins by establishing Katherine Newbury (Thompson) as one of the late-night talk show circuit’s most heralded hosts and also perhaps its grouchiest behind the scenes. After being accused of being a “woman who hates women,” she begrudgingly adds Molly (Kaling) to her all-male writing staff. Her presence isn’t very welcome at first, but when Katherine’s ratings plunge and the network threatens to cancel her show, Molly’s fresh ideas and unique perspective might be the only things that can save Katherine’s career.
Directed by Nisha Ganatra (“Love,” “Transparent”), “Late Night” also stars John Lithgow, Reid Scott, Hugh Dancy, Amy Ryan, and Stern Show celebrity superfan Ike Barinholtz. The script was penned by Mindy herself, whose real-life TV career began with a college internship on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and continued with a writing gig and then a starring role on the U.S. adaptation of “The Office.” As Stern Show fans will remember, she and Howard discussed her early days in TV at length during her 2014 sit-down.
“Late Night” opens June 7 in theaters.
