HBO comedy series debuts in August

Stern Show veteran John Goodman gets rich off of God in the first trailer for “The Righteous Gemstones,” a new HBO comedy series from “Eastbound & Down” and “Vice Principals” mastermind Danny McBride about a family of seedy televangelists whose priorities include money and hedonistic pleasures.

Goodman stars as the ministry’s no-nonsense leader Eli Gemstone, father to Jesse (McBride), the heir apparent, Kelvin (Adam Devine), a wildcard, and Judy (Edi Patterson), the overlooked daughter who has a problem with the way her family keeps women in the shadows.

“Stop the hate and celebrate what the lord has given us,” Eli says amid a montage showing his family celebrating what their flock of followers have given them—like a mansion, expensive cars, and private jets.

“The Righteous Gemstones” is produced, created, written, and directed by McBride, whose breakout came in front of the camera when he was starring in comedies like recent Stern Show guest Seth Rogen’s “Pineapple Express.” The series co-stars Cassidy Freeman, Tony Calvero, Tim Baltz, and Greg Alan Williams.

“The Righteous Gemstones” debuts in August on HBO.
