A woman orphaned during the Rwandan genocide gets drawn into a case involving her enigmatic past in “Black Earth Rising,” an upcoming series starring Michaela Coel and repeat Stern Show guest John Goodman.

Set against the deeply complicated relationship between Europe and Africa, the political thriller’s trailer (above) follows legal investigator Kate Ashby (Coel) and her boss Michael Ennis (Goodman), an American-born lawyer working in the U.K., as they attempt to prosecute international war criminals.

It’s more than just a case for Kate, however, as the African militia member on trial may be connected to her own past. “Where you were born, it’s not always easy just to come out with the truth,” Goodman’s character tells her (above).

Written and directed by Hugo Blick, “Black Earth Rising” is jointly produced by BBC Two and Netflix. The series, co-starring Tamara Tunie, Noma Dumezweni, and Harriet Walter, debuts on the digital streamer on Jan. 25.
