Ah, the things we do for love. Just ask New Mexico resident Monica Mares, 36, and her son Caleb Peterson, 19, who were charged with incest and face up to 18 months in prison if they are convicted.

As discussed during Robin’s news, the saga began after Mares reconnected with her estranged son Peterson last year via Facebook. From there, it was love at long-delayed second sight.

The couple shared their romantic tale in exclusive individual interviews with the Daily Mail in the hopes of raising awareness for Genetic Sexual Attraction (GSA) relationships. “I went to go pick [Peterson] up at his dad’s house in Texas.” Mares explained. “The first time I met my son in person I was so happy and excited I gave him a big hug.”

“It felt like I met somebody new in my life and I fell in love with him,” Mares said. “At first I told him, ‘I’m sorry I don’t know how you are going to react to this. I’m your mom and you’re my son, but I’m falling in love with you.'”

Mares never raised Peterson. She gave birth to him when she was 16 and quickly gave him up adoption. Still, the two are related by blood and when New Mexico caught wind of their affair in February they were charged with fourth-degree incest, a low level felony that can result in a $5,000 fine and/or 18-month jail term.

If the trial doesn’t go as she hopes, Mares said she’s prepared to take their case all the way up to the Supreme Court. If her relationship with Peterson doesn’t go as she hopes, Mares does have nine other children.
