“Quincy,” also featuring Dr. Dre, Will Smith, and Snoop Dogg, debuts Sept. 21 on Netflix

September 11, 2018

Music icon Quincy Jones’ profound effect on the entertainment industry is undeniable. Just ask the litany of A-list singers, actors, producers, rappers, and media moguls paying their respects to his enduring legacy in the trailer for his forthcoming documentary “Quincy.”

Co-directed by Alan Hicks and Quincy’s daughter Rashida Jones, the Netflix doc boasts an intimate look at the life and career of the music titan, who has racked up more Grammy nominations than anyone else in history with 79. It also features interviews with and footage of a multitude of entertainment legends he’s worked with (if not discovered), including recent Stern Show guests Sir Paul McCartney, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, and Snoop Dogg as well as Will Smith, Dr. Dre, Frank Sinatra, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Jackson.

The trailer focuses on both the 85-year-old visionary’s many successes over the years as a trumpeter, producer, conductor, composer, and arranger and also his private life, including recent health scares and a hospital visit from Rashida. It also focuses on Quincy as an inspirational force for others, with both Smith and Winfrey at one point crediting much of their own success to his mentoring.

Actor and musician Jamie Foxx shared a similar story during a 2017 Stern Show visit. He told Howard all about the time he was invited to Jones’ home for a career-defining pep talk from Quincy, Oprah, and acclaimed actor Sidney Poitier, among others. Watch a clip from the interview (below).

“Quincy,” featuring the all-new original song “Keep Reachin'” by Quincy Jones, Mark Ronson, and Chaka Khan, premieres on Netflix on Sept. 21.
