Howard Teases Songs I Want to Hear Special With Mötley Crüe Guitarist John 5

Plus, recent SIWTH guest Jimmy Jam has high praise for Howard’s singing

February 22, 2024

Howard has long praised the chops of current Mötley Crüe guitarist John 5 so on Wednesday, he was pleased to announce him as the latest guest host for “Songs I Want to Hear,” a Howard 101 series where musicians play some of their favorite tunes. “I love this guy John 5 — he’s one of my favorite guitarists,” he said of the axe man, who also had long stints with Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson. “He’s one of these guys like Billy Joel — you name a song, and he can play it.”

In addition to playing riffs from AC/DC, Rush, Ozzy Osbourne, and more, John at one point demonstrated how he would play “The Star-Spangled Banner” with his teeth as a child. “I chipped my tooth, and my mom was so mad at me,” the musician recalled during the special with a laugh.

“Isn’t this great?” Howard noted. “The guy does a great special for us and it’s all filled with that kind of stuff.”

Speaking of “Songs I Want to Hear,” past guest host Jimmy Jam recently emailed executive producer Gary Dell’Abate to commend Howard on his voice. “I just heard Howard sing the ‘Green Acres’ theme and it reminded me … Howard has great pitch,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame producer wrote. “A lot of folks don’t – even singers who are good … I noticed it years ago, but it just hit me today because he was goofing on a song but in perfect pitch.”

“Who knew?” Howard said of the news. “Here I am singing the ‘Green Acres’ theme and evidently Jimmy Jam is recognizing me as something of a talent.”

“You’re shocked, I’m shocked, everybody’s shocked,” co-host Robin Quivers said before jokingly adding, “Has something happened to Jimmy Jam’s hearing?”

Songs I Want to Hear With John 5″ airs on Feb. 23 at 7 and 10 p.m. on Howard 101, and the Jimmy Jam special can be found on demand on the SiriusXM app!
