VIDEO: Watch Memet Walker’s Tearful Apology to Howard

Stern Show staffer reads a heartfelt card after an unintentional slight during the I.Q. test results

He may have scored higher on his I.Q. test than Brent Hatley, but Stern Show staffer Memet Walker was the one shedding tears in the studio on Wednesday morning.

Though he went on to score a 121 to Brent’s 112, Memet questioned the validity of the results in the heat of the moment before they were disclosed, accusing his co-workers of colluding with test administrator Dr. Sitt to make him lose. “I’m going to accept it no matter how rigged you guys have made it,” he told them at the time.

Howard, though, took exception with the comment as it cast doubt about the validity of the segment, so he took a moment to assure the audience of the pains taken to make a fair test.

Reflecting back on the experience later in the day, Memet said he felt remorseful about his comments. “I woke up [at] freaking like 1 o’clock in the morning last night in a panic. I feel like I owe you an apology,” he admitted to Howard. “Because I was saying, you know, I didn’t trust you and that you were rigging it.”

Howard didn’t feel an apology was needed and furthermore told his staffer that it made for “great radio,” so there were no hard feelings. But the words of encouragement only served to make Memet more emotional. “You mean a lot to me,” he said as he began to cry.

With teardrops welled up in his eyes and the backdrop of some stirring piano tunes, courtesy of Fred Norris, Memet read Howard his full apology note.

“Howard, I feel I owe you an apology for saying on air that I thought the contest was fixed,” he began. “I went home today feeling sick about it. In the heat of the moment in the studio I was just trying to be funny. It didn’t occur to me that I could be seen as legitimately questioning your integrity or the show’s honesty. I’d never purposely disrespect you like that. You’ve done far too much for me. I hope you can understand and accept my deepest, most sincere apology. I’m sorry.”

While unnecessary, Howard graciously accepted the candid words and offered a few more positive thoughts for Memet. “I like your energy. I like what you put into the I.Q. test. You let it all hang out … Not only do I accept your apology, I love your apology,” he said.

As for Brent, Memet admitted that the win over his co-worker didn’t feel as sweet as he had anticipated. “I felt bad afterwards. I felt bad for Brent because we’re friends … I underestimated how bad I would feel about it,” he acknowledged.

And the boot-kissing punishment didn’t make him feel any better. “That’s when I was like, ‘Holy shit, this is sad,’” he recalled.

Luckily, Brent didn’t seem to mind one bit and chalked it up to simply paying up on his bet. “You’re a man, you make a bet, you pay it off,” he said.

No hard feelings.
