Nelly Fans Stream His Hits to Help Pay Off IRS Debt

A loyal fanbase can be a beautiful thing, just ask Nelly.

The St. Louis rapper and the IRS aren’t quite getting along these days, as Nelly is reportedly in debt for more than $2.4 million. If not paid off, the IRS may start seizing Nelly’s assets and property. Additionally, Nelly owes the Missouri Department of Revenue nearly $150,000 in state tax.

Enter Nelly’s fans.

Using the hashtags #SaveNelly and #DoItForNelly, supporters of the rapper have vowed to raise money for Nelly by endlessly streaming his hits on services such as Spotify. While the movement doesn’t call for any particular hit, 2002’s “Hot in Herre” seems to be getting the most love. Earning that much dough through streaming is a tall task, as Spin estimates at least 287 million streams will be required (as the average Spotify stream earns artists between $0.006 and $0.0084). However, Nelly’s fans seem up to the challenge.
