Video: Disruptive Green Party Candidate Crashes U.S. Senate Debate

“How do you serve democracy ... if I’m excluded?” yells Maryland senatorial candidate Margaret Flowers

October 28, 2016

A video has gone viral of a third party candidate not taking kindly to America’s two-party system.

Green Party candidate Dr. Margaret Flowers is running for Maryland’s open Senate seat but wasn’t allowed to participate in the debate Wednesday in Baltimore, as she’s not expected to draw 10 percent of the vote in November.

Yet, Dr. Flowers joined the debate anyway, taking the stage in protest of the two-party system that excluded her. Interrupting the conversation between Democratic Rep. Chris Van Hollen and Republican Del. Kathy Szeliga, she asked “So, how does it serve democracy or serve the public if I’m excluded from this discussion if I’m on the ballot?”

“This is how you’re treating a candidate?” she added while being ushered off stage by security.

Flowers posted a clip of the disruption onto her Facebook campaign page, along with the hashtag “#OpenDebates.” Check out her post below (and another video of the incident above).
