One comedy legend explores the public and private life of another in “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling,” a two-part, four-hour documentary directed by Stern Show regular Judd Apatow.

“For 25 years he was the most important mentor that I had, but in a lot of ways he was a mystery to me,” Judd explains at the beginning of the doc’s official trailer (above), published Thursday by HBO.

In addition to voiceover narration from Judd, who directed Garry on his critically acclaimed “The Larry Sanders Show,” the trailer for the upcoming special teases interviews with several of Shandling’s closest friends and family, including recent Stern Show guests Jim Carrey, Jerry Seinfeld, and Sarah Silverman. It also includes clips from a variety of Garry’s most memorable performances across the years—from talk shows to stand-up comedy—and offers a peek into Garry’s sometimes turbulent private life.

After Garry died in March of 2016, Howard offered a heartfelt remembrance of the comedian, who had appeared previously on the Stern Show and—along with Dennis Klein and Jeffrey Tambor—was also the progenitor of the show’s oft-used “Hey Now.”

“’The Larry Sanders Show’ was genius,” Howard said. Listen to more of his tribute to Garry (below).

In total, over 40 of Garry’s family and friends are featured in “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling,” including Stern Show veterans Sacha Baron Cohen, Jon Favreau, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Bob Saget, and Kevin Nealon, the last of whom opened up to Howard in 2016 about his close relationship with Garry. Hear a clip from their conversation (below).

“The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling” premieres March 26 at 5 p.m. on HBO. Watch the trailer (above).
