VIDEO: J.J. Abrams Debuts Faux ‘Star Wars’ Film in Cut-for-Time ‘Saturday Night Live’ Sketch

NBC clip stars Mikey Day, Kate McKinnon, Kenan Thompson, Pete Davidson, and guest host Charles Barkley

March 5, 2018

A short time ago, in this very galaxy, “Saturday Night Live” filmed a “Star Wars”-themed sketch starring Saturday’s guest host Charles Barkley and featuring fellow Stern Show veteran J.J. Abrams. The bit didn’t make it to air this week because of time constraints, but NBC has since published it online.

The clip (above) begins with J.J., director of “The Force Awakens” as well as the upcoming “Episode IX,” offering a first look at the space-set franchise’s fictional new standalone installment, “The Mos Eisley Five.” He introduces a scene showing the “five”—Barkley, “SNL” regulars Mikey Day and Kate McKinnon, a droid, and a Wookiee—attempting to rescue a Rebel pilot (Pete Davidson) from the clutches of a slug-like alien (Kenan Thompson).

The crux of the sketch’s comedy relies upon the old “Star Wars” trope that most characters, regardless of species or planet of origin, seem to have no trouble understanding the native tongues of everyone else. The same holds true for all the characters in the clip … except for Barkley’s Jedi master, who grows increasingly frustrated over his inability to understand what everyone is saying.

Barkley and Abrams aren’t the only Stern Show alums making “Saturday Night Live” appearances this month. Bill Hader, who last visited sat down with Howard in 2016, will host “SNL’s” March 17 episode along with musical guest Arcade Fire.

“Saturday Night Live” airs Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. on NBC. Check out the cut-for-time sketch (above) and watch J.J. explain to Howard his decision to direct his first “Star Wars” film (below).
