Freedom Comes at a Price in First Trailer for ‘Westworld’ Season 2

New teaser also gives fans their first glimpse of Shogunworld

March 29, 2018

A stirring piano rendition of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box” ushers “Westworld” fans into their first look at the HBO drama’s second season. As each haunting note of the song progresses, so too do the revelations of what’s to come following the robot uprising that gave newfound freedom to those who were never meant to be free.

Star Evan Rachel Wood (Dolores) begins and ends the teaser talking to her character’s programmer Bernard Lowe, played by actor Jeffrey Wright. She gently and ominously asks him, “Why on Earth would you ever be frightened of me?”

Meanwhile, Thandie Newton’s character Maeve continues the search for her child while Ed Harris’ the Man in Black is intent on destroying and revealing the fantasy world they’re all existing in. Also revealed is the first, albeit short, glimpse of Shogunworld, the mysterious new park of the series.

Though a teaser for Season 2 aired during the Super Bowl back in February, HBO is calling Thursday’s preview the first official trailer for “Westworld’s” sophomore season. And if the stripped-down grunge classic playing underneath the video sounds vaguely familiar (beyond just being a Nirvana cover) it may very well be because it comes from composer Ramin Djawadi, the Emmy-nominated maestro behind the scores of another HBO hit – “Game of Thrones.”

Season 2 of “Westworld” returns April 22. Watch the new trailer (above).
