VIDEO: Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan Are a Bickering Gay Couple Who Must Suddenly Raise a Teen in ‘Ideal Home’
Dramedy co- stars Jake McDorman and Alison Pill
April 11, 2018Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd are a self-indulgent couple whose worlds get turned upside down by a teen boy in the comedy-drama “Ideal Home.”
A newly released trailer for the film (above), which premiered at this year’s Mardi Gras Film Festival in Australia, begins with Paul’s character (also named Paul) attempting to direct Steve’s celebrity chef character in a TV commercial. Erasmus is trying to play a cowboy, but he’s having trouble selling it.
“He’s like a gay Butch Cassidy,” Paul says (above). “Except not butch.”
Despite the fact they’re constantly bickering, Paul and Erasmus seem to enjoy a rather idyllic life. But all of that changes after Erasmus learns he has a long-lost grandson who is looking to move in with them after his father goes to jail. Paul and Erasmus eventually take the teen boy in and shenanigans ensue after a child services investigator (Alison Pill) suddenly takes an interest in their atypical home.
It’s shaping up to be a big year for Rudd. In addition to starring in “Ideal Home” and opposite Alexander Skarsgård in the Netflix neo-noir “Mute,” the Stern Show veteran’s pint-sized superhero character Ant-Man will be featured in two upcoming Marvel blockbusters: “Avengers: Infinity War,” premiering April 27, and “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” opening July 6.
When Rudd visited the Stern Show in 2015 shortly after the release of the original “Ant-Man,” the actor spoke to Howard about making the film and what it’s like to play a small superhero on the big screen. He also shared his story of working alongside Marvel legend Stan Lee. “[I]t’s like the president … he’s the guy,” Paul told Howard.

“Ideal Home,” also starring Jake McDorman and Jesse Luken, was written and directed by Andrew Fleming (“The Craft”). Watch the latest trailer (above).
