VIDEO: A Struggling Musician Gets Credited With Writing the Beatles’ Greatest Hits in ‘Yesterday’ Trailer
Musical comedy stars Himesh Patel alongside Kate McKinnon, Ed Sheeran, James Corden, and Lily James
February 12, 2019A struggling singer-songwriter wakes up from a bike accident to discover he’s the only one who has ever heard of the Beatles in “Yesterday,” a fantastical musical comedy from Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle.
The film’s new trailer begins with Jack (Himesh Patel), a down-on-his-luck musician, taking a tumble over the handlebars of his bicycle during a freaky, worldwide blackout. After waking up in the hospital he learns he’s missing several of his teeth while the rest of the world is missing any memory of the Fab Four having ever existed.
He soon uses his knowledge of the Beatles extensive catalogue to his advantage, taking credit for coming up with many of the ubiquitous hits only he remembers were penned and performed by the likes of John Lennon, George Harrison, and 2018 Stern Show guests Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Jack then teams with a big-shot record producer played by Emmy-winning “Saturday Night Live” standout Kate McKinnon. His rise to success is quick and includes run-ins with the likes of fellow Stern Show veterans James Corden and Ed Sheeran.
“Lemme just give you this advice: song title ‘Hey Dude,’” Sheeran tells Jack during a recording session of what’s supposed to be “Hey Jude.”
“It’s so much better,” McKinnon’s character agrees.
Directed by and produced by Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire”) and written by Richard Curtis (“Love Actually”), the film also co-stars Lily James (“Baby Driver”) as Jack’s love interest. It’s unclear whether Sirs Paul and Ringo are set to make a cameo, but one scene toward the end of the trailer has Corden implying two of the songs’ real authors have arrived to reclaim their tunes.
“Yesterday” opens June 28 in theaters. Watch the official trailer (above) and check out Howard’s sit-downs with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr here and here.
