Kelly Clarkson surprised concertgoers in Detroit recently with an unexpected cover of Brandi Carlile’s hit song “The Joke.”

The singer, songwriter, and former “American Idol” standout spoke highly of her colleague before launching into the track, which earned Brandi multiple Grammys earlier this month. “She is so inspiring, and talented, and just a really rad human,” Clarkson said. “I hope I do it justice, Brandi.” Check out the video (above).

Kelly has paid homage to several Stern Show veterans during her ongoing “Meaning of Life” tour. Last week during a stop in Wisconsin she offered up a rendition of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow,” the breakout hit from “A Star Is Born” which earned them and Mark Ronson an Oscar on Sunday.

Listen to Kelly’s version of “Shallow” (below) and see how it compares to Howard and Robin Quivers’ recent on-air duet here.

Kelly made her Stern Show debut in November 2017 while promoting her album “Meaning of Life.” She sat for a wide-ranging interview with Howard and put on a mini-concert, delivering live performances of several original tunes as well as “Breakaway,” a song co-written for her by Avril Lavigne. When Brandi joined the Stern Show in 2018, meanwhile, she wowed listeners with a cover of her own. In addition to performing “The Joke” in studio, she and her band turned in a memorable version of Crosby, Stills, and Nash’s “Helplessly Hoping.” Check it out here.
