Rock legends reminisce about the birth of the “California Sound” in “Echo in the Canyon,” an upcoming documentary about the mid-1960s music scene in Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon neighborhood.

Directed by Andrew Slater and starring second-generation Grammy winner Jakob Dylan, the film celebrates a sea change in popular music with emerging bands like the Byrds, the Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, and the Mamas and the Papas. It follows Jakob as he cruises through Laurel Canyon in a convertible, chatting with everyone from Beatles’ drummer Ringo Starr and Beach Boys wunderkind Brian Wilson to the late Tom Petty, who died shortly after filming in 2017.

“California was like this legendary paradise,” Petty explains (above).

“I fell in love with it,” Ringo adds.

The film also features Eric Clapton, Jackson Browne, Howard Stern Birthday Bash performer Beck, Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, and Stern Show veterans and two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famers David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash, among others.

“That’s an incredible environment for a musician to be in,” Nash says in the trailer.

Graham also shared a fond Laurel Canyon memory during his 2016 visit to the Stern Show, telling Howard how he wrote the song “Our House” one afternoon at Joni Mitchell’s house. “It was a cold, dreary Los Angeles morning and we get back to Joni’s house in Laurel Canyon, and I say, ‘Hey, why don’t I light a fire and you put some flowers in that vase you just bought,’” Nash recounted.

“Echo in the Canyon” opens in theaters May 24 in L.A. and May 31 in New York.
