VIDEO: Patrick Stewart Trades His Spaceship for a Vineyard in ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Teaser
CBS All Access series debut in 2019
May 24, 2019Turns out space wasn’t the final frontier after all.
CBS All Access released the first teaser for “Star Trek: Picard,” a spinoff series with Stern Show veteran Patrick Stewart reprising his role as “Star Trek: The Next Generation’s” Captain Jean-Luc Picard. This time, however, instead of presiding over the U.S.S. Enterprise, the legendary science-fiction character appears to be commanding a winery.
The short clip offers more questions than answers. It doesn’t reveal why Picard traded in his Starfleet gig for a terrestrial vineyard, or why he’d rather spend his Golden Years fermenting grapes instead of fighting Gorn, but surely something caused him to open a winery and boldly go where everyone from Stern Show guests John Legend and Dave Matthews to Francis Ford Coppola have gone before.
“15 years ago today, you led us out of the darkness,” a female voice tells him (above). “You commanded the greatest rescue armada in history. Then, the unimaginable. What did that cost you? Your faith? Your faith in us? Your faith in yourself? Tell us, why did you leave Starfleet, Admiral?”
Stewart never gets around to answering her question but if the familiar “Star Trek” score swelling in the backdrop is any indication his head may still be up there past the clouds.
“Star Trek: Picard” co-stars Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, and Michelle Hurd. Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote both of J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” films, serves as executive producer with Stewart himself also co-producing.
When Stewart sat down with Howard in 2015 to discuss his Starz series “Blunt Talk,” he also opened up about his many years starring in “Star Trek” films and TV shows. He said Captain Picard is the role that changed everything for him as an actor but admitted franchise creator Gene Roddenberry resisted his casting early on. “Gene was opposed to me being in the show from the very beginning,” Stewart told Howard.
