VIDEO: ‘Gotham’ Finally Gives Birth to the Joker in New Season 5 Trailer

Fox’s DC Comics-inspired Batman drama returns on Thursday

Gotham City is finally giving birth to the Joker.

Fox recently dropped a new trailer for Thursday’s episode of “Gotham,” confirming Jeremiah Valeska (Cameron Monaghan), one of Gotham City’s more maniacal criminals, is indeed on the precipice of transforming into Batman’s legendary arch-enemy the Joker.

Titled “Ace Chemicals,” the new episode serves as an origin story for Jeremiah’s Joker, including a showdown at the Ace Chemicals factory opposite a young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz). While the trailer (above) doesn’t reveal the Joker in his final form, it does show Bruce and Jeremiah trading quips and blows over a bubbling cauldron of toxic sludge, quite possibly the very one responsible for giving the Joker the uniquely disturbing look he has enjoyed in the comics and on the big screen.

“You need me. I’m the answer to your life’s questions,” Jeremiah tells Bruce during their tussle. “Without me you’re just a joke without a punchline.”

Of course, the Joker is only one of several iconic Batman villains featured on Fox’s DC Comics-inspired drama . Past Stern Show guests Cory Michael Smith and Robin Lord Taylor also star on “Gotham” as the Riddler and the Penguin, respectively. Cory spoke about the show at length when he sat down with Howard in 2018, even revealing how he landed the coveted role of the Riddler in the first place. Listen to a clip from the interview (below).

“Gotham,” also starring Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, and Morena Baccarin, airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
