Steve Carell faces a cosmic conundrum in the official trailer for Netflix’s upcoming comedy series “Space Force.”

The Emmy-nominated actor and 2015 Stern Show guest plays General Mark R. Naird, a career military man whose ambitions of taking over the Air Force hit some turbulence when he’s instead tapped to head up a brand-new branch of the U.S. military: the Space Force. The dutiful general accepts the challenge but quickly learns navigating the final frontier is trickier than it sounds.

“It has always been my dream to start something from the ground up, but space is … hard,” Carell’s character tells a Congressional panel (above).

Set to the sound of Sir Elton John’s upbeat anthem “I’m Still Standing,” the rest of the trailer shows Carell trudging through the desert in a spacesuit and instilling doubt and unease in his subordinates as one plan after another fails to take flight. He also struggles to see eye-to-eye with the program’s eccentric head scientist Dr. Adrian Mallory (John Malkovich).

“So, the game of mental chess has begun,” Carell tells him at one point.

“It’s Hungry Hungry Hippos at best,” Malkovich responds.

“Space Force” is created by Carell and showrunner Greg Daniels (“The Office”). The series co-stars Diana Silvers, Tawny Newsome, Ben Schwartz, Lisa Kudrow, Jane Lynch, Jimmy O. Yang, Noah Emmerich, Alex Sparrow, Don Lake, and the late Fred Willard.

“Space Force” takes flight May 29 on Netflix.
