VIDEO: Ed Sheeran Opens Up About His Music-Making Process in ‘Songwriter’ Trailer

Ed Sheeran shares several secrets of his trade in the official trailer for “Songwriter,” a documentary about the award-winning pop star and repeat Stern Show guest’s renowned music-making skills.

Directed over the span of a decade by Ed’s cousin Murray Cummings, “Songwriter” is described as “an intimate and personal look into the writing process of one of the world’s biggest artists.” The teaser for the upcoming doc (above) incorporates footage of Ed fiddling around with a variety of instruments, highlights some his earliest influences, and features a few of his regular collaborators, like Benny Blanco and Julia Michaels.

“Songwriter” also heavily highlights the time Ed spent crafting “÷,” his third studio effort. The album wound up going platinum 10-times over, helped the singer-songwriter net two of his four Grammys, and spawned several mega-hits, including “Shape of You,” “Perfect,” and “Castle on the Hill,” the latter of which Ed memorably performed during a 2017 visit to the Stern Show. During his sit-down with Howard Ed actually delved deep into the songwriting process for “Castle on the Hill,” revealing his particular inspiration for the tune was rock icon, Broadway star, and soon-to-be Netflix commodity Bruce Springsteen. “I’m a recent Springsteen admirer,” Ed told Howard. “I’m a bit late to the party but, I listened to ‘The River’ and I was like, ‘I need to write a song like ‘The River.'”
