Fall Movie Preview 2017: From ‘Mother!’ to ‘Molly’s Game’

“mother!”

Darren Aronofsky’s highly anticipated psychological horror film “mother!” has elicited strong reactions before even premiering in theaters with celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain tweeting that the film “is dark, dark, dark, brilliant and will upset the fuck out of people” after getting a sneak peek:

The film centers around a couple—Lawrence and Bardem—whose quiet home is disrupted when “uninvited guests” arrive. It was written, directed, and produced by Aronofsky. Check out the trailer (above).

“Brad’s Status”

Director: Mike White

Stars: Ben Stiller, Michael Sheen, Jenna Fischer, Luke Wilson, Austin Abrams

Release date: Sept. 15

Ben Stiller is back as a family man dealing with some mid-life disappointment in “Brad’s Status.” The Mike White-directed dramedy finds Stiller as the titular character contemplating the success of his friends while he works at a non-profit with “nothing to show for it” during a trip with his son to look at colleges.

White (“School of Rock,” “Nacho Libre”) told NPR the film’s concept arose from his own anxiety about status, which led him to investigate the subject. “I find when I’m in that kind of frame of mind, it’s so embarrassing to talk about with other people,” he said.

“Brad’s Status” will be distributed by Amazon Studios and Annapurna Pictures. Check out the trailer (above).

“Kingsman: The Golden Circle”

Release date: Sept. 22

“Kingsman: The Secret Service,” 20th Century Fox and Matthew Vaughn’s fast-paced, ultra-violent adaptation of Mark Millar’s graphic spy novel, seemingly came out of nowhere in 2014 to both take the box office by storm and put its young star Taron Egerton on the map. Now, three years later, fans are positively bursting at the seams for the sequel.

“Kingsman: The Golden Circle” once again stars Taron and an eye-patch sporting Colin Firth as dapper do-gooders looking to save Queen and country from nefarious forces, including Halle Barry, Julianne Moore, and “Game of Thrones” and “Narcos” star Pedro Pascal. Assisting them in their new mission are a couple of gun-toting, foul-mouthed American lawmen played by Stern Show veterans Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges. Watch the latest red band trailer (above).

“Battle of the Sexes”

Stars: Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Bill Pullman, Elisabeth Shue, Andrea Riseborough, Alan Cumming, Sarah Silverman, Chris Parnell, and Fred Armisen

Release date: Sept. 22

Emma Stone and Steve Carell go head-to-head in “Battle of the Sexes,” a sports comedy-drama loosely based on the epic, real-life match between women’s tennis phenom Billie Jean King (Stone) and a sexist, aging male pro in Bobby Riggs (Carell). Set in the 1970s, the film follows both the star athletes’ personal lives as well as their nationally televised showdown, which reportedly attracted 90 million viewers. Stern Show regular Sarah Silverman co-stars in the film, as “World Tennis” magazine co-founder Gladys Heldman, alongside Andrea Riseborough, who plays Marilyn Barnett, King’s hairdresser-turned-lover, and several other big names. “LBJ”

Director: Rob Reiner

Stars: Woody Harrelson, Richard Jenkins, Bill Pullman, Kim Allen, C. Thomas Howell, and Michael Stahl-David

Release date: Sept. 22

Directed by entertainment icon and 2016 Stern Show guest Rob Reiner, “LBJ” tells the story tells the story of Lyndon B. Johnson’s ascension to the White House (via John F. Kennedy’s assassination), as well as his early years as Commander-in-Chief and the eventual passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Played in recent years by both Liev Schreiber (in “The Butler”) and Stern Show regular Bryan Cranston (in “All the Way), President Johnson will this time be portrayed by another Stern Show veteran in Woody Harrelson, who also starred in 2017’s summer blockbuster “War for the Planet of the Apes.” Check out the trailer (above).

“Stronger”

Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslany, Miranda Richardson, Clancy Brown

Release date: Sept. 22

Jake Gyllenhaal turns in a compelling performance as a real-life survivor of the 2013 Boston Marathon attack in “Stronger.” The 2015 Stern Show guest plays Jeff Bauman, a man who was waiting near the finish line for his girlfriend Erin Hurley (played by “Orphan Black” star Tatiana Maslany) when the first bombs went off and wound up losing both of his legs. In addition to the terrorist attack itself, “Stronger” tackles the aftermath of the tragedy, including Bauman’s long road to recovery and the emotional toll of being a survivor. “Woodshock”

Director: Kate and Laura Mulleavy

Stars: Kirsten Dunst, Joe Cole, Pilou Asbæk

Release date: Sept. 22

Kirsten Dunst plays a woman who works at a marijuana dispensary in “Woodshock,” A24’s tense and trippy drama that premiered earlier this month at the 74th Venice International Film Festival. Her character Theresa uses highly potent, mind-altering drugs to cope with a tragic loss and as a result she spends much of the trailer (above) disoriented, wandering around a lake barefoot, and trying to bury some unknown pain. Co-directed by Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the women behind the indie clothing and accessories brand Rodarte, “Woodshock” co-stars Joe Cole (“Peaky Blinders”) and Pilou Asbæk.

“American Made”

Director: Doug Liman

Stars: Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, Jayma Mays, Jesse Plemons, Lola Kirke

Release date: Sept. 29

Tom Cruise plays TWA pilot Barry Seal in “American Made,” a biographical crime film which sees his character getting in over his head after the CIA recruits him to start running cocaine and guns to the Contras in Latin America. It’s directed by Doug Limon, the man behind “The Bourne Identity” and Cruise’s somewhat recent “Groundhogs Day”-meets-“Aliens” action flick “Edge of Tomorrow.”

“Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House”

Liam Neeson fights government corruption in “Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House,” a political thriller exploring the secret identity of “Deep Throat,” the government mole who helped expose Richard Nixon’s involvement in the 1972 Watergate break-in.

Neeson plays the titular informant Mark Felt, a former FBI Associate Director who turned against his own government to expose corruption and misconduct at the highest levels.

Stern Show regular Ike Barinholtz, meanwhile, co-stars as one of Neeson’s subordinates. During his most recent sit-down with Howard, Barinholtz revealed Neeson gave him valuable acting advice during one of the film’s crucial scenes in which Ike was supposed to get angry at Liam. “Blade Runner 2049”

Director: Denis Villeneuve

Release date: Oct. 6

After a 35-year-hiatus, Harrison Ford has returned to star in the eagerly awaited follow up to the 1982 neo-noir, science-fiction flick “Blade Runner.” In “Blade Runner 2049,” Ford—now 75—reprises his role as Blade Runner Rick Deckard and stars alongside series newcomer Ryan Gosling, who was a toddler when the beloved first film came out. Gosling plays Officer K, a Los Angeles cop who stumbles across a dark secret that could spell doom for mankind.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival”), the R-rated film will enjoy an IMAX release with a reported run time of 2 hours, 43 minutes. Watch the official trailer (above).

“The Florida Project”

Director: Sean Baker

Stars: Willem Dafoe, Brooklynn Prince, Valeria Cotto, Bria Vinaite, Caleb Landry Jones

Release date: Oct. 6

“The Florida Project” stars Willem Dafoe as the manager of Magic Castle, a low-rent Florida motel nearish enough to Disney World to occasionally attract tourists. Much of his time is spent dealing with his hotel’s troublesome full-time residents, including six-year-old Moonee (Brooklyn Prince)—who finds trouble around every corner—and her single, seemingly unreliable mom Halley (Bria Vinaite). Sean Baker (“Tangerine”) directed the film which debuted at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and hits theaters in late October.

“The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)”

Director: Noah Baumbach

Stars: Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Adam Sandler, Emma Thompson, Grace Van Patten, Elizabeth Marvel, Candice Bergen

Release date: Oct. 13

Dustin Hoffman heads a dysfunctional family in Netflix’s “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected).” Written and directed by Oscar-nominated indie filmmaker Noah Baumbach (“While We’re Young”), the family-focused dramedy follows Harold (Hoffman), his two sons (Stern Show veterans Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller), his daughter (Elizabeth Marvel), and wives (Emma Thompson and Candice Bergen) as they gather together in New York to celebrate his lifetime of artistic achievements.

The trailer (above) teases everything from a violent confrontation between Sandler and Stiller to a family singalong featuring much of the cast.

“Geostorm”

Director: Dean Devlin

Stars: Gerard Butler, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, Katheryn Winnick, Andy Garcia, Daniel Wu

Release date: Oct. 20

Actor and Stern Show veteran Gerard Butler is tasked with saving the Earth from outer space in “Geostorm.” The upcoming disaster flick envisions a world where mankind has learned to combat global warming with an intricate network of climate-controlling satellite, run by Butler from orbit. When something goes wrong, however, the satellites go on a rampage and threaten to destroy the Earth in the process.

“The Snowman”

Director: Tomas Alfredson

Stars: Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J.K. Simmons, Val Kilmer, Chloë Sevigny

Release date: Oct. 20

A serial killer hunts women in the dead of winter in “The Snowman,” a crime thriller starring Michael Fassbender as detective Harry Hole, the protagonist in a series of crime novels from Norwegian author Jo Nesbø. In this tale, Hole tracks a murderer whose hobbies include building snowmen to leave at crime scenes after decapitating his victims. Co-stars include Chloë Sevigny, Val Kilmer, and Oscar-winning Stern Show guest J.K. Simmons. Watch the ice-cold trailer (above).

“Wonderstruck”

Director: Todd Haynes

Stars: Oakes Fegley, Millicent Simmonds, Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams

Release date: Oct. 20

Based on Brian Selznick’s acclaimed novel, “Wonderstruck” tells the tales of Ben and Rose: two children from different eras who embark on quests in the big city after running away from home. In Rose’s (Simmonds) story, set in 1922, she leaves New Jersey in search of her idol, an actress played by Julianne Moore. In the other, set in 1977, Ben (Fegley) leaves home after the death of his mother and sets out to find his dad in New York City. Directed by Todd Haynes (“Carol”), “Wonderstruck” premiered at 2017 Cannes Film Festival in May and hits theaters in October.

“Suburbicon”

Director: George Clooney

Stars: Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Oscar Isaac

Release date: Oct. 27

There’s humor and violence aplenty in “Suburbicon,” a George Clooney-directed dark comedy about a neighborhood rattled by a deadly home invasion.

Matt Damon stars as Gardner Lodge, a pencil-pushing father and husband who snaps after getting targeted by the mob. Clooney co-wrote the script with Joel and Ethan Coen (“Fargo”), and like many Coen brother crime stories this one zeroes in on the disturbing underbelly of a small, otherwise quiet town. The two-time Oscar winner and one-time Stern Show mystery guest has starred in several Coen brothers films throughout his career (“O Brother Where Art Thou?” and “Hail, Caesar!,” to name a few), but “Suburbicon” marks his first time directing one.

“Thank You for Your Service”

Stars: Miles Teller, Amy Schumer, Haley Bennett, Joe Cole, Scott Haze, Beulah Koale

Release date: Oct. 27

Miles Teller battles post-traumatic stress disorder in DreamWorks’ “Thank You for Your Service.” The military drama follows a group of Iraqi combat veterans returning home from war as they hope to adjust to the everyday trials and tribulations of civilian life while dealing with the aftermath of being on the battlefield.

Directed by Jason Hall (“American Sniper”) and adapted from the best-selling book by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author David Finkel, “Thank You for Your Service” also stars Joe Cole (“Peaky Blinders”) and Stern Show regular Amy Schumer, among others.

“Professor Marston & the Wonder Women”

Director: Angela Robinson

Stars: Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall, Bella Heathcote, Connie Britton, Oliver Platt

Release date: Oct. 27

Kink and comics collide in “Professor Marston & the Wonder Women,” a fetish-filled biopic about the secret identity of Harvard psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston, a.k.a. the man who invented Wonder Woman.

The indie flick focuses heavily on a love triangle of Professor Marston (Luke Evans), his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their young lover Olive (Bella Heathcote). As the story goes, Elizabeth and Olive are the inspiration behind his ubiquitous DC Comics heroine (whose origin story was adapted recently into a blockbuster Patty Jenkins film). Needless to say, Professor Marston’s bedroom predilections, including a lasso, eventually work their way onto the comic book page.

“Thor: Ragnarok”

The God of Thunder is back in “Thor: Ragnarok,” Marvel’s third standalone superhero flick starring Chris Hemsworth as everyone’s favorite golden-haired, hammer-wielding Avenger. In this latest installment, Thor faces off against the death goddess Hela (Cate Blanchett). He also gets a haircut, has his hammer destroyed, teams up with his sometimes-evil brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and is forced to fight his big green friend the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). “Ragnarok” also welcomes relative newcomer Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a powerful sorcerer who lets Thor know destiny has some wild plans for him.

“Last Flag Flying”

A group of Vietnam vets are reunited in Richard Linklater’s new film after one man’s son is killed while fighting overseas during the Iraq War. Academy Award nominees Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell, and Laurence Fishburne play old friends who set out on a tragic yet remedial road trip that shows a different side of American military service.

“Lady Bird”

The familiar teenage feeling of struggling to be understood eventually leads Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson to jump out of her mom’s moving car. “Brooklyn” star Saoirse Ronan plays the lead in this coming-of-age comedy that co-stars Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”) and Lucas Hedges (“Manchester by the Sea”).

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

When the cops can’t solve her daughter’s murder, a woman puts up a series of billboards to let them know she’s none too pleased with their inability to find a single suspect. Oscar winner Frances McDormand plays the headstrong mom giving grief to Sheriff Bill Willoughby, played by Woody Harrelson.

DC Comics’ most popular superhero team-up squad makes their debut in “Justice League,” the Zack Snyder (and Joss Whedon) directed blockbuster taking flight in November.

Though he’s a lynchpin of the superhero super-group in the comic books, Superman (Henry Cavill) died fighting the good fight on screen in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” In “Justice League,” the hero’s absence seems to be what brings the rest of the crew—including Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and Aquaman (“Game of Thrones” standout Jason Momoa)—together.

“Murder on the Orient Express”

The cast aboard the Orient Express include two Academy Award winners, four Oscar nominees, and a “Hamilton” Tony winner — but they’re all suspects in a murder. Kenneth Branagh directs and stars as Detective Hercule Poirot in this adaptation of the Agatha Christie classic.

“Death Wish”

Release date: Nov. 22

Revenge once again leads to vigilantism in the upcoming remake of “Death Wish.” Bruce Willis takes over in the role of Paul Kersey, made famous by Charles Bronson in the 1974 original. After a home invasion leaves his wife dead and his daughter seriously injured, Willis takes the law in his own hands to track down who attacked his family. But the blood of his enemies proves not to be enough.

“Molly’s Game”

Stars: Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Michael Cera, Chris O’Dowd,

Release date: Nov. 22

His writing has won Aaron Sorkin multiple Emmys and an Oscar already but now he’s trying his hand at directing a feature film for the first time in “Molly’s Game.” No surprise, Sorkin also serves as screenwriter for this adaptation of Molly Bloom’s tell-all book about the high-stakes and star-studded poker games she once ran that eventually caught the attention of the FBI.

While no A-listers’ names are used in the movie, A-lister Jessica Chastain stars as Molly while Michael Cera takes on a composite character of several Hollywood actors who frequented her poker games. Kevin Costner, Idris Elba, and Chris O’Dowd round out the cast.
